Strength Training Unmasked: Is It Ever Too Late to Start?

November 21, 20244 min read

Have you ever thought about strength training but hesitated because it feels like the ship has sailed?

Maybe you feel like you’ve missed your chance to build strength, or the idea of walking into a gym is just too intimidating. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone...and I want you to know it’s never too late to start.

Strength training has been transformational in my life, but I didn’t start as a fitness enthusiast. In fact, I had no clue how to lift weights or where to begin. Now, I work with women every day who feel the same way I once did -unsure if it’s possible to start and a little scared of the unknown. Here’s the truth: starting strength training isn’t about chasing perfection; it’s about discovering your strength, no matter where you are in life.

Why Strength Training?
Strength training is so much more than building muscle. It’s about:

  • Bone Health: Strength training helps combat osteoporosis by improving bone density, even in midlife and beyond.

  • Muscle Preservation: Sarcopenia (muscle loss) can start as early as your 30s, but resistance training helps maintain and rebuild muscle mass.

  • Everyday Functionality: From standing up with ease to climbing stairs, strength training makes daily activities feel effortless.

  • Mental Empowerment: It’s not just about physical strength—it’s about building resilience and confidence.

My Journey to Strength Training

When I first started, I didn’t know how to lift weights or if I even belonged in the gym.

My confidence was low, and I worried I’d look out of place. Armed with a little determination (and a lot of self-doubt), I stepped into the free weights area for the first time, clutching my workout plan like a shield or some sort of permission slip to enter that zone.

Confidence is built when you show up for yourself; one rep at a time

That first step wasn’t easy, but it taught me a valuable lesson: confidence doesn’t come before action - it’s built through showing up for yourself, one rep at a time.

It was this journey, paired with the worries I often hear from women about feeling unwelcome in the gym or not knowing where to start, that inspired me to create the Strong Bones Club.

Women over 50 face a 1 in 2 chance of developing osteoporosis

Women over 50 face a 1 in 2 chance of developing osteoporosis, but many are unsure how to prevent it or feel too intimidated to try strength training.

With a little serendipity (and some perfect timing involving a university study), I realized there needed to be a space where women could feel supported, informed, and empowered to start lifting.

3 Myths About Strength Training (and Why They’re Wrong)

  1. “I’ll Get Bulky”
Women often worry lifting weights will make them look bulky, but in reality, it takes intense training and specific conditions to build large muscles. Strength training for health and fitness typically leads to a leaner, more defined look.

  2. “It’s Bad for My Joints”
Strength training, when done properly, can actually protect and support your joints by strengthening the muscles around them.

  3. “I’m Too Old to Start”
No matter your age, strength training offers significant benefits. It’s never too late to start building strength and supporting your health for the future.

How to Start (Even If You’ve Never Lifted Weights)

  1. Start Small: Begin with bodyweight exercises like chair squats or wall push-ups. These simple movements can build a strong foundation.

  2. Focus on Consistency: It’s better to do lighter sessions consistently than to overdo it and burn out.

  3. Seek Guidance: Whether it’s a coach, a class, or a community, support can make all the difference in building confidence and staying motivated.

What Strength Training Can Unlock for You
Strength training isn’t just about the weights. It’s about:

  • Building confidence to face life’s challenges.

  • Feeling empowered in your body, no matter your age.

  • Creating energy and strength to enjoy the things that matter - whether that’s hiking, dancing, or simply keeping up with the kids.
